SXSW '09 Insider's Guide

I always pack too much when i go to austin, even though i am there for a full ten day conference.

the truth is, i only usually need the following items for the 10 day conference:

  • one pair of jeans. maybe 2. i mean, i'd like to switch. but usually...just one is fine. gross and fine.
  • 3 comfy T shirts
  • 2 kinda cute but still comfy shirts but probably only 1
  • 1 cute dress in case i wanna look super cute next to micki krimmel (who always dresses great)
  • workout clothes (which i hopefully will use) (but never do) (there's no time!)
  • sneakers and doc martens
  • umbrella
  • extra room in suitcase for the massive amount of SWAG, magazine and SxSW goodybag items
  • sweater in case it gets "chilly"
  • music listening device for hotel room

But every year i get caught up in the packing process, become sidetracked....and tell lies to myself. Like... "this year i might dress up for the Fader party." Or...."this year i'll wear something different every day"

No. Not this year.

And if i need something, forget something, or regret this SxSW resultion? This year if i need an extra somethin_somethin.....I'll head to Jo's on South Congress for coffee, where i always wind up anyway, and peruse Austin's hip shopping district they call SoCo.

Here's my list. It seems a lot longer than yours. Am I a princess? I mean, I'm going to be there for over a week...

- 2 Pairs of jeans
- 4-5 T-shirts
- 5 Pairs of socks and underoos
- 1 sweatshirts
- 1 pair of shorts
- Toiletries
- Camera bag (digital and film)
- Audio recorder thingy
- Ukulele
- Umbrella (new this year, but it's taken me 2 years in a row to learn this)
- Sneaks
- Walkin' shoes
- Dress shoes
- Light jacket
- Button up shirt + tie
- iPod
- Chargers for everything
- Extra glasses (to ensure that I won't need them)
- Business cards
- Current issues of The Economist, The Atlantic and The New Yorker
- Corkscrew
- Day bag
- Laptop
- multi colored pens, paper and other small crafty things that are normally reserved for keeping children entertained.

The corkscrew and Ukulele are key.

OK just finished packing...Went a little heavy... 5 or 6 t shirts, 4 button ups, 4 pair jeans, a blazer, a zip sweater, a hoody, a leather jacket, boots, workout shoes, 2 pair dress shoes, a pair of comfy shoes, 4 pair shorts, Nintendo Wii, iPod speakers, 2 macbooks, a bunch of DVDs for downtime, etc. Oh well. 9 days. May as well have enough stuff. And if all fits into 2 bags!!

Fred Rogers actually may pack more because he has to do an outfit change every time he enters a new location - complete with a shoe change!

And yes, downtime is a must. So I'll be at the Hilton Garden with wii sports and guitar hero III if anyone's interested. =)
